Applying as a Software Developer: what matters

UK employers and the agencies that recruit for them read a software CV in two passes. The first is a keyword pass over the stack, the working pattern (hybrid, on-site or contract) and the seniority of the role. The second is a short human read: what your team owned, how large the system was, and what changed once your work shipped.

At least as important are projects and measurable results. Describe not only what you built, but what impact it had – such as faster load times, higher test coverage or fewer outages. Give every role one line of context, then three or four achievement bullets with numbers behind them: deployment frequency, p95 latency, incident counts, cloud spend, test coverage.

UK format: two sides of A4, no photograph, no date of birth, no National Insurance number, and British spelling throughout (organise, licence, programme). UK recruiters work from plain single-column documents, so skip tables, text boxes and graphics.

Qualifications and registration: software development is not a regulated profession in the UK, so there is no register to join and no licence number to quote. What counts instead is evidence: cloud and platform certifications (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud), ISTQB or Scrum credentials for consultancies and testing-heavy roles, and a computing degree or higher apprenticeship. Name each certification with the year you earned it and keep a GitHub or portfolio link in the header, where a recruiter will see it in the first few seconds.

Software Developer on your CV: the key tips

Practical advice for an application that gets read.

  • Structure your tech skills into categories such as languages, frameworks, databases and DevOps tools.
  • Open with a three-line profile that names your specialism – backend, full stack, platform or data – instead of 'software developer' on its own.
  • Quantify delivery in UK terms: 'cut checkout API p95 latency from 900 ms to 220 ms' or 'moved releases from fortnightly to twice a day'.
  • State your right to work in the UK next to your contact details when the advert does not offer sponsorship; agencies screen on that question first.
  • Tailor each CV to the advert, because most UK developer roles are filled through agency keyword searches rather than direct applications.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions applicants ask most about resumes and applications.

How long should a UK software developer CV be?

Two sides of A4 is the norm for UK applications and rarely more, whatever your seniority. One page works well for graduates and career changers; senior and lead engineers can use the second page for a short selection of projects or open-source work. Agencies in London, Manchester and Leeds usually forward a Word or PDF document rather than a profile, so keep the file name simple and make sure the document reads correctly when it is printed in black and white.

Do I need a GitHub profile on a UK CV?

Yes, a link to GitHub, GitLab or a portfolio is highly valuable in IT. It lets recruiters see your way of working and code quality directly. On a UK CV put it next to your email address and make sure the pinned repository is something you would be happy to talk through at interview; an empty or outdated profile does more harm than no link at all.

Should I include a photo or my date of birth?

No. UK CVs do not carry a photograph, date of birth, marital status or National Insurance number. A modern UK CV stays with contact details, profile, skills, experience and education, on A4 paper. Recruiters here also expect British spelling (organise, licence, programme) and no age-related dates such as the year you left school, both of which are covered by the Equality Act 2010.
