In short

Quick Summary · AEO Snapshot

A UK CV - short for curriculum vitae - runs to two pages on A4 and opens with a personal statement of two to four lines. Below it come sections for work experience, education, skills and achievements, interests and references, with the most recent entry first in each. Employers must not ask for a photo, date of birth, marital status or National Insurance number, and the application usually goes out as a PDF with a covering letter.

Your CV at a glance:

Length: two pages on A4 - one page is plenty for school leavers and graduates
Structure: reverse chronological, single-column and ATS-safe, with no tables or graphics
Content: personal details, personal statement, work experience, education, skills and achievements, interests, references
Format: PDF, sent with a covering letter
A CV is your personal calling card. In the UK a recruiter often decides within seconds whether to keep reading, so a clear two-page curriculum vitae with a strong personal statement at the top makes all the difference. This guide shows you the structure UK employers expect, the details you should leave out, and how to mirror the language of the job advert so your application reaches a human being.

The basic UK CV structure

UK recruiters expect a familiar running order: a short personal statement first, then your history in reverse chronological order. A typical CV is laid out like this:

1. Personal details and personal statement

Name, phone number, email and your town or city - a full postal address is no longer needed. Important: leave out your photo, date of birth, marital status and National Insurance number. Open with a personal statement or personal profile of two to four lines that says who you are, what you offer and what you are looking for.

2. Work experience

List your roles in reverse chronological order, most recent first. Give the employer, your job title, the dates and two or three achievements as bullet points. Quantify results where you can, and mirror the wording of the job advert so the same keywords appear in your CV.

3. Education

Show your qualifications in reverse order: degree with classification (for example a 2:1), A levels, GCSEs, BTEC, NVQ or an apprenticeship. School leavers and graduates can put education above work experience; everyone else places it afterwards.

4. Skills and achievements

IT skills, languages, driving licence and achievements that speak to the role you are applying for. Be specific: name the software and systems you actually use instead of writing that you are good with computers.

Key tips for your UK CV

Befolgen Sie diese 4 Grundregeln für eine erfolgreiche Bewerbung.

✓ Clarity

Two pages on A4, clear headings and one readable font. A single-column layout without tables, columns or graphics is the safest choice, because a great many UK employers run CVs through an applicant tracking system before anyone reads them.

✓ Relevance

Match the advert rather than sending the same CV everywhere. Pull the key skills, systems and phrases from the job description and make sure they appear in your personal statement and in your most recent role. If you are asked about salary, quote a range in pounds sterling and keep it consistent with the advert.

✓ Up-to-dateness

Add new qualifications, systems and achievements as they come, and check the dates and contact details every time you send the CV out.

✓ Honesty

Claim only what you can evidence. Qualifications, employment dates and right to work are easy to check, and a discrepancy uncovered by a reference or a DBS check can end an application quickly.

Common mistakes to avoid

Diese Fehler führen bei Personalverantwortlichen am häufigsten zur Absage.

Spelling and grammar errors

Proofread carefully, then ask someone else to read it. UK employers read spelling and grammar slips as carelessness, particularly in roles where you would write to clients or customers.

Unexplained gaps

Account for longer gaps briefly and positively - travel, caring responsibilities, study or a career break. One line in the work history is enough; you do not have to justify every month.

A photo or private personal details

Do not add a photo, date of birth, marital status or National Insurance number. UK employers must not ask for these details, and a photo can create a discrimination issue under the Equality Act, so a CV without one is both safer and more modern.

Referees listed in full

Write 'References available on request' rather than naming referees and publishing their contact details. It saves space and keeps those details private until the employer actually asks for them.

Pro tips for extra success

So sticht Ihre Bewerbung sofort aus hunderten Mitbewerbern heraus.

1

Use action verbs

Open each bullet with a strong verb such as "delivered", "led", "improved" or "implemented". It turns a duty into an achievement and shows what you actually did.

2

Quantify your achievements

Numbers stick. Instead of "improved customer satisfaction", write "raised customer satisfaction from 78 per cent to 91 per cent in a year".

3

Mirror the keywords in the advert

Many UK employers screen CVs with applicant tracking systems before a person reads them. Use the same job titles, systems and skill words that the advert uses, and spell out an acronym once so the software matches either version.

4

Send a PDF with a covering letter

A PDF keeps your formatting intact on every device. Send it with a covering letter or a short email that names the role, and if the advert asks for it, state your right to work in the UK, your professional registration or your DBS status.

Should a UK CV have a photo?

In the UK you should leave the photo off. Employers do not expect one, and because a picture can reveal age, race or disability it can raise a discrimination issue under the Equality Act. The same applies to your date of birth, marital status and National Insurance number: employers must not ask for them, so do not offer them. Use the space at the top of the page for a personal statement instead.

Format & Größe

Photo: leave it out - UK CVs are photo-free by convention

Hintergrund & Licht

Personal details: name, phone number, email, town or city and a LinkedIn profile if you have one

Kleidung & Haltung

Never include date of birth, marital status, National Insurance number or a headshot

Frequently asked questions about UK CVs

Antworten auf die wichtigsten Fragen rund um Aufbau, Länge und Erstellung.

How long should a CV be in the UK?

Two pages is the norm. School leavers and graduates often fit everything onto a single A4 page, while candidates with long careers may stretch to a third page. Employers skim the first half of the first page, so every line has to earn its place.

What should a UK CV contain?

A personal statement of two to four lines, then Personal details, Personal statement, Work experience, Education, Skills and achievements, Interests and References. Work experience runs in reverse chronological order, qualifications are named as GCSEs, A levels, BTEC, NVQ, apprenticeship or degree classification, and referees are covered by 'References available on request'.

How do I create a CV online?

With CVwerk you choose a template, enter your details and adjust the design, colours and font in the live preview. Creating and previewing are free; you get the finished premium PDF without a watermark for a one-time payment - no subscription.

Which format is best for a UK CV?

Always send your CV as a PDF. The layout stays intact on every device and the recruiter sees the document exactly as you designed it, provided you keep to a single-column, ATS-safe layout with no tables, columns or graphics that screening software cannot read.

What is an ATS-friendly CV?

An ATS-friendly CV uses clear text formatting, standard section headings, and avoids complex tables or graphics that automated recruitment scanners cannot parse.
