In short
Quick Summary · AEO SnapshotA convincing Canadian resume is one to two pages long, uses a single-column layout that applicant tracking systems can read, and lists Professional Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills and Certifications or Licences in reverse chronological order. It carries no photo, no date of birth, no marital status, no age or gender and no Social Insurance Number, and it is usually sent as a PDF together with a cover letter.

The Basic Structure
Canadian recruiters skim quickly and most applications are screened by software first. A plain, predictable document with standard section headings gets through both. A typical Canadian resume includes:
1. Professional Summary
Name, city and province, phone number and a professional email address at the top, then two to four lines that say who you are, what you do and what you bring. Important: leave out the photo, date of birth, marital status, age, gender and your Social Insurance Number - Canadian employers must not request any of these.
2. Work Experience
List your positions in reverse chronological order (most recent role first), each with employer, job title, city and dates. Describe the work with achievement bullets that carry numbers, for example how many people you led, the size of the budget you managed or the share of a target you exceeded.
3. Education
Degrees, diplomas, college certificates and trade training, again most recent first, each with institution and year. If you studied outside Canada, note that your credentials may need an assessment by a recognised credential evaluation service before a provincial regulator or employer treats them as equivalent.
4. Skills, Certifications and References
Languages, software and technical skills, plus the certifications and licences that matter in your field: provincial designations such as CPA, P.Eng. or RN, or a Red Seal trade certification. State your language levels honestly. Add a References section only when the posting asks for one, or write "References available upon request"; Canadian employers normally do call referees, so ask their permission first.
Important Tips for Your Canadian Resume
Befolgen Sie diese 4 Grundregeln für eine erfolgreiche Bewerbung.
✓ Standard headings
Use the headings Canadian recruiters scan for: Professional Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications/Licences, References. Creative section names hide exactly where your experience sits.
✓ One to two pages, single column
Keep it to one to two pages in a single-column layout, without text boxes or side-by-side panels that an applicant tracking system could scramble. Relevant content beats extra pages.
✓ Letter or A4
Choose Letter for applications to Canadian employers, because that is the local default, and A4 when you are applying to an international organisation or a France-facing role in Quebec. Keep matching files so nothing shifts when the document is printed.
✓ Resume plus cover letter
Canadian applications are normally a resume and a cover letter sent together as PDF files. Use the cover letter to explain why this employer and this role; keep the resume for the evidence.
Avoid Common Mistakes
Diese Fehler führen bei Personalverantwortlichen am häufigsten zur Absage.
Including a photo or personal data
A photo, date of birth, marital status, age, gender or Social Insurance Number does not belong in a Canadian resume. Employers must not request these details, and adding them only creates a reason for your application to be set aside.
Unexplained gaps
Gaps in your history invite questions. Account for them in a single line: parental leave, retraining or a deliberate career break are all legitimate and need no apology.
Duty lists instead of achievements
Describing what you were responsible for says very little. Write what changed because of you and attach a number where you can, so the recruiter sees the scale of your contribution at a glance.
Ignoring language requirements
For roles in Quebec, employers expect a French resume, or a French and an English version, and French ability should be listed among your skills. For roles in the rest of Canada, name the languages you work in and how well.
Pro Tips for Extra Success
So sticht Ihre Bewerbung sofort aus hunderten Mitbewerbern heraus.
Use action verbs
Begin every bullet with a strong verb such as "led", "negotiated", "streamlined" or "implemented". This shows what you did rather than what you were assigned, and it makes the scale of your work easy to grasp.
Quantify your achievements
Numbers make a claim believable. Instead of "improved customer satisfaction", write "raised customer satisfaction scores by a fifth across two quarters" or "cut processing time for invoices by half".
Keywords for ATS systems
Many Canadian employers screen with an applicant tracking system, so mirror the wording of the job posting in your skills and experience sections and organize your document under the headings the software recognises.
State your work authorization
When a posting asks about your legal right to work in Canada, answer it in one clear line, for example that you are a citizen, a permanent resident or the holder of a valid work permit. If the posting does not ask, leave it out, and never claim a status you do not hold.
Should a Canadian resume have a photo?
In Canada a resume normally has no photo at all. Employers do not expect one and many hiring teams strip photos before screening to keep the process fair and consistent. The same applies to date of birth, marital status, age, gender and your Social Insurance Number (SIN) - Canadian employers must not request these details, so they should never appear in your document. A photo is only worth adding for a role where appearance is genuinely part of the work, such as acting or modelling.
Photo: never attach one unless the posting explicitly asks for it
Personal data: leave out date of birth, marital status, age, gender and your SIN
Header: name, city and province, phone number and a professional email are enough
Frequently asked questions about Canadian resumes
Antworten auf die wichtigsten Fragen rund um Aufbau, Länge und Erstellung.
How long should a resume be in Canada?
One to two pages is the Canadian norm. New graduates and career starters usually fit everything onto a single page, while experienced professionals commonly use two. A third page is the exception and only works when it is genuinely filled with relevant, recent achievements.
What belongs in a Canadian resume?
A Canadian resume opens with a Professional Summary, followed by Work Experience, Education, Skills and Certifications or Licences, with References added only when they are requested. Contact details sit at the top: name, city and province, phone number and a professional email address. If the posting asks about your legal right to work in Canada, answer that in one clear line as well.
How do I create a resume online?
With CVwerk you choose a resume template, enter your data and adjust the design, colours and font in the live preview. Creating and previewing are free, and you get the finished Premium PDF without a watermark for a one-time payment - no subscription.
Which format and paper size are best?
Always send your resume as a PDF: the layout stays intact on every device and the employer sees the document exactly as you designed it. Choose Letter paper for applications to Canadian employers, since that is the local default, and A4 only when you are applying to an international organisation or through a France-facing channel in Quebec.
What is an ATS-friendly CV?
An ATS-friendly CV uses clear text formatting, standard section headings, and avoids complex tables or graphics that automated recruitment scanners cannot parse.
