The registration block that goes first
- NMC PIN – the number, the part of the register and the renewal date, stated as current.
- Revalidation – the date of your last submission and the next due date, because an employer inherits that obligation.
- DBS – enhanced check with the update service status if you subscribe, and the date of the last certificate.
- Right to work – status and visa expiry where it applies, in one line.
- Band and specialty – the Agenda for Change band you have worked at, the clinical area and the patient group.
- Mandatory training – dates for life support, adult protection, manual handling, infection control and medicines management.
Clinical evidence a ward manager can question
Write in the terms a nurse will recognise: bed numbers, acuity, dependency, caseload, escalation tools and audits. A shift-lead line is stronger than a list of duties, and a quality improvement project is stronger than an assertion about being organised. Name the systems you have used, from electronic patient records to medication administration, and name the specialty, because a respiratory ward and a surgical assessment unit ask different questions. Keep the language British and clinical: escalated, liaised, assessed, documented, discharged. Avoid the vocabulary of care values without an example attached, since panels score values at interview against real incidents, and a CV full of slogans gives them nothing to ask about. If you have worked agency shifts across several trusts, sum the settings and the hours rather than list every booking, and name the trusts where you are already known.
Bullets a shortlisting panel scores
- Deputised as shift lead on a 28-bed medical ward, managing 8 staff and escalating two deteriorating patients using NEWS2.
- Completed 2,300 practice hours across acute medicine and community placement, with medicines management signed off.
- Mentored four student nurses through their final placements, with all four passing their episodes of care.
- Led a falls audit on the unit, presenting the results to the governance meeting and reducing recorded falls over one quarter.
- Delivered training on adults at risk to 15 colleagues as the ward link nurse for adults at risk.
- Supported the rollout of a sepsis screening tool across two wards, audit checks over eight weeks.
Band, revalidation and referees
State the band you have held rather than the one you want, and if you are applying for a step up, show the duties you already carry at that level: managing a shift, supervising staff, managing a caseload without direct oversight. Revalidation needs 35 hours of continuing professional development, five written reflections, 450 practice hours over three years and confirmation from a line manager, so keep the record current and mention the totals on the CV. Referees should be a current clinical manager and one other registered professional, with work email addresses. Overseas applicants also need the NMC Test of Competence, a computer-based test followed by an objective structured clinical examination, plus the English language requirement, and it helps to state where you are in that process. For a first post after registration, name the preceptorship offer you are looking for, since it tells the employer what support you will need in the first six months.

FAQ
Most posts require it, or an application in progress. State the body, your PIN and the status honestly, since the employer verifies it before a start date.
One line with the last submission date and the next due date, plus the CPD hours and practice hours you have recorded. Keep the evidence file for the interview.
No. UK CVs carry no photo, no date of birth and no marital status, and many trusts anonymise applications at shortlisting.
