HGV Driver CV: Class 1 Licence, Driver CPC and Tacho Evidence

Auf den Punkt gebracht
A transport manager reads an HGV CV for compliance before experience. Licence category, Driver CPC hours, digital tachograph card and medical dates decide whether you can be insured on the vehicle at all. Put that block at the top of the first page, in the order an operator checks it, and the rest of the document only has to prove that you turn up and keep the record clean.

The licence and compliance block

  • Licence category – C+E for Class 1, C for Class 2, or C1, with the date you passed each test and the years of experience on that category.
  • Driver CPC – 35 hours of periodic training completed, the Driver Qualification Card expiry date and the hours already banked toward the next five-year cycle.
  • Digital tachograph card – the card number is not needed on a CV, but the issue date and a clean infringement record for the past 12 months are.
  • Medical – the DVLA medical date, and the D4 renewal date once you are 45 or over.
  • Extra tickets – ADR, HIAB, forklift, Moffett, FORS or CLOCS training, each named with its expiry date.
  • Right to work – status and any visa expiry, in one line.

Experience a transport manager checks

Name the vehicles and the work, not the employer alone: articulated units, rigids, curtain-siders, tail-lifts, refrigerated trailers, container work, trunking, multidrop or regional distribution centre deliveries. State the load types you have secured and the equipment you can operate without supervision. Compliance evidence carries more weight than mileage: daily walk-round checks, defect reporting, load security to DVSA guidance, and a record of no prohibitions at roadside checks. Mention the drivers hours rules you work to, so a traffic office can see that you understand the 4.5-hour rule, the 45-minute break and the reduced rest limits. If you have used a transport management system or a planning app, name it. Night trunk and weekend work should be stated plainly, since that is where the shortages are. Agency work should name the operators you drove for, because a traffic office reads that as site familiarity rather than a gap. Say whether you will take nights out, weekend runs or starts before six, since those answers decide which vehicles you can be put on.

Bullets for a traffic office

  • Completed four trunk runs a week between a Daventry hub and two regional depots, hitting a 90-minute delivery window.
  • Delivered 12 to 18 pallets a day on a city centre multidrop route, using a tail-lift and pallet truck.
  • Carried out daily walk-round checks and defect reports, with no prohibitions at roadside checks in three years.
  • Kept tachograph infringements at zero across the last 12 months, with printouts available for audit.
  • Loaded and secured mixed pallet loads to DVSA guidance, and covered night trunk cover at short notice.

Medical, assessment and the first year

From 45 the DVLA medical repeats every five years, and the D4 form with a GP sign-off is what keeps the licence valid, so keep the dates visible and current. Most operators run an assessment drive before an offer, often with a short theory paper on drivers hours, and many insurers apply conditions to drivers under 25 or to anyone with less than 12 months on the category. Say plainly how much experience you have rather than let a start date imply more. If you are moving from vans to Class 1, lead with the licence date and any recent training, and offer to take an assessment. A short, honest CV with a clean record beats a long one with a gap in the compliance block. Keep the DQC and your last medical report to hand for the interview, and expect the operator to check your licence online, with your permission, before a start date.

FAQ

No. Class 2 and C1 drivers are hired constantly, and many operators train up. State the category you hold and the date you passed to keep the record accurate.

Yes for professional driving. Give the hours completed and the DQC expiry date; without a valid card you cannot drive commercially in the UK.

Mention a clean record if it is true, and be ready to explain any infringement at interview. Operators audit digital cards before they offer a start date.

One page is usually enough and two is the maximum. Compliance details and the last ten years of work carry the weight.
