Registration and clearances go first
- Teacher registration – the current state or territory authority, your registration number and its expiry. Registration does not transfer between states, so state exactly which one you hold.
- Working with Children Check – the state scheme you are cleared under, plus the number and expiry date.
- Teaching areas and year levels – the methods you are qualified to teach, and whether you are primary, secondary or both.
- Skills assessment for migration – if you are applying from overseas, the assessing authority outcome belongs here, with the date.
Evidence beats adjectives
Australian principals read hundreds of applications that all claim passion and dedication. Replace those words with evidence from practicum and paid teaching:
- Taught Year 7 and 9 English across a ten-week practicum, planning and delivering 60 lessons with a supervising teacher’s sign-off.
- Raised reading comprehension scores in a Year 4 class by introducing weekly guided reading groups.
- Managed behaviour using a documented whole-class routine; reduced low-level disruption referrals during a term.
- Differentiated for students with additional needs alongside the learning support team.
Casual, relief and contract teaching
Most Australian teachers start on relief or short-term contracts. For those applications, lead with availability, the schools you have already worked in, and your willingness to teach across year levels. A short list of schools and dates is stronger than a paragraph about flexibility, and principals share relief teacher feedback with each other.
Structure and referees
Order: contact details with suburb and postcode; registration and clearances; teaching areas; a three-line professional summary; teaching experience with evidence; practicum; education and qualifications; professional learning; referees. Referees should include a supervising teacher and a school principal or deputy where possible, with position, school and mobile number.
If you are applying interstate, say when you expect registration to transfer and which state you are targeting – it removes the biggest doubt a principal has about an out-of-state applicant.
