Trades Resume: Red Seal Certification and Apprenticeship in Canada

Auf den Punkt gebracht
Contractors hiring trades read a resume for tickets, hours and tools, in that order. Whether you are a first-year apprentice or a Red Seal journeyperson, one page is enough: certification status, hours by trade, the work you can do unsupervised, and the safety training that lets a site put you to work on day one.

What a site supervisor looks for

  • Certification status – apprentice level, journeyperson certificate, or Red Seal endorsement, with the province that issued it.
  • Hours by trade – hours logged in each scope, because apprenticeship ratios and progression depend on them.
  • Scope of work – what you complete alone, from rough-in to finishing, commissioning or troubleshooting.
  • Safety tickets – WHMIS, fall protection, confined space, aerial lift and first aid, with expiry dates where relevant.
  • Tools and drawings – the equipment you own or operate, and your comfort working from drawings and specifications.

Structure of a one-page trades resume

Name, city and province, phone; a headline such as Red Seal Electrician – Commercial Construction; a certification block directly beneath it with certificate number, issuing province, Red Seal status and apprenticeship level; then experience by employer with site type, scope and hours; then safety training; then tools and skills; then two references from supervisors or site leads. Apprentices should list classroom levels completed and the hours banked with the provincial apprenticeship authority. Canadian resumes carry no photo, no date of birth and no marital status, and a full address is not needed.

Bullets that show scope, not attendance

  • Installed and terminated 400+ branch circuits across three commercial builds, passing inspection without rework.
  • Logged 6,200 hours toward a refrigeration apprenticeship, covering 1,800 on commercial rack systems.
  • Ran a two-person crew on rough-in for a 40-unit residential project and met the framing schedule.
  • Read and laid out from mechanical drawings, managing penetrations with the structural trades.
  • Trained three first-year apprentices on conduit installation, lockout procedure and daily site cleanup.

Red Seal, provincial certificates and apprenticeships

The Red Seal endorsement is an interprovincial standard available in dozens of trades and is administered through the provincial apprenticeship authorities. Carrying it tells an employer your qualification travels across Canada; it is not a licence to work unsupervised in every province, and some trades add provincial requirements. Describe your status precisely: apprentice level two, journeyperson certified, or Red Seal endorsed. If your training came from outside Canada, name the assessment body and the stage you have reached. Safety tickets expire, so list dates rather than claiming a ticket that has lapsed, and never state hours you cannot document with a logbook.

Apprenticeship progression depends on ratios set by the province, so a resume that states your level, hours and classroom blocks makes it easy for a contractor to judge whether hiring you keeps the crew compliant. If you are between levels, say when your next intake starts and whether you can attend block release; a contractor who knows the schedule can plan around it.

Union and non-union experience are both credible, but name the agreement or the local if you have worked under one, because rates, call-outs and dispatch rules differ. Tools matter as well: list the equipment you own and can bring, and the instruments you can operate without supervision.

For a first-year application, lead with the pre-apprenticeship programme, the shop or site hours you have already logged, and any ticket that lets a supervisor put you to work on day one. A short line about your own vehicle and willingness to travel between sites answers a question contractors ask before they call.

FAQ

In a certification block directly under your name and headline, with certificate number, province and trade. It is the first thing a contractor verifies.

Give total hours logged and the split by scope, plus classroom levels completed. Your provincial apprenticeship authority can confirm the figures if an employer asks.

Yes, list them with expiry dates. WHMIS, fall protection, confined space and first aid are commonly required before a site will let you start.

One page suits most trades roles. Two pages are reasonable if you have supervisory, estimating or project management experience you want considered.
