Applying as a Internship: what matters
In Canada an internship arrives by one of two routes: through a co-op program attached to your studies, or through a direct application to an employer. Make it obvious which one applies to you, because a co-op posting usually asks for a work term of a fixed length and your program has to approve it.
The page set-up is flexible. Letter paper and A4 are both accepted, and one or two pages are normal for a student. Keep the layout plain and put your program, your school and the month you expect to graduate at the top of the education section.
Canada is officially bilingual, so you may write the resume in English or in French. Choose one language and stay in it, and mirror whichever language the job posting uses. Leave your photograph, your date of birth and your Social Insurance Number out of the document.

Checklist for a successful application
Match your skills and experience precisely to the job's requirements profile. Name relevant certifications, tools, and hands-on knowledge in the upper third of your resume.
Use concrete results, figures, and metrics instead of plain lists of duties. That immediately shows hiring managers your practical value and your areas of responsibility.
Use a clear, hierarchical structure and standardized section headings. That way modern applicant tracking systems (ATS) can capture and map your data without errors.
Check spelling, grammar, and contact details thoroughly. Always save your application as a high-resolution PDF file to ensure a consistent layout on all devices.
Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions applicants ask most about resumes and applications.
Should a Canadian resume be written in English or French?
Either is accepted. Use the language of the job posting and keep the whole document in it; if the role itself is bilingual, say so in the skills section.
How do I describe a co-op work term on my resume?
Treat it as employment. Name the employer, the city, the work term dates and the length of the term, then describe your tasks and results in bullet points.
Do Canadian employers want a photograph or my Social Insurance Number?
No. Keep the photograph, your date of birth and your Social Insurance Number off the resume. Employers ask for the number only after you are hired.
