Applying as a Internship: what matters
Most US internships are screened by a recruiter and by an applicant tracking system, so keep the document machine-readable: a single column on US Letter paper, one page, and the familiar headings Education, Experience and Skills.
Education goes first while you are still studying. Give the degree, the school, the month you expect to graduate and your GPA when it sits at 3.0 or above; your major GPA can be used when that number is stronger. Say whether the internship you want is paid or unpaid, which term you are available for, and whether you are applying for academic credit.
Two details catch students out. Recruiters do not want a photograph, a date of birth or a marital status on a US resume. And if you study on an F-1 visa, name your CPT or OPT work authorisation only when the posting asks for it.

Checklist for a successful application
Match your skills and experience precisely to the job's requirements profile. Name relevant certifications, tools, and hands-on knowledge in the upper third of your resume.
Use concrete results, figures, and metrics instead of plain lists of duties. That immediately shows hiring managers your practical value and your areas of responsibility.
Use a clear, hierarchical structure and standardized section headings. That way modern applicant tracking systems (ATS) can capture and map your data without errors.
Check spelling, grammar, and contact details thoroughly. Always save your application as a high-resolution PDF file to ensure a consistent layout on all devices.
Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions applicants ask most about resumes and applications.
Do US internship resumes need a photograph or a date of birth?
No. US employers keep photographs, dates of birth and marital status off applications to stay within federal anti-discrimination rules, so do not add them.
Is an unpaid internship worth listing on a resume?
Yes. Unpaid work shows the same tasks and results as paid work, so describe it in the same way and make the term and your hours per week clear.
Should I put my GPA on an internship resume?
Add it under Education when it is 3.0 or above, and use your major GPA if that figure is stronger. After a year of full-time work you can drop it.
