What a crew application is really judged on
- Availability – restaurants trade from early morning to late night, seven days. Say which shifts you can work, including weekends and late closes.
- Reliability – a first job is a commitment. Show that you turn up: sport teams, volunteering, school attendance awards, family responsibilities.
- Working with people – any customer-facing experience counts, from a school fundraiser to a weekend market stall.
- Right to work – state your status briefly, and the hours you can legally work if you are on a student visa.
A one-page structure for a first resume
Contact details with suburb and postcode; a two-line summary stating the role and your availability; education (school, year level, expected completion); any work, volunteering or team experience with two bullet points each; skills such as cash handling, food preparation, cleaning and communication; two referees – a teacher, coach or previous supervisor is fine. No photo and no date of birth.
Traineeships and certificates
McDonald’s runs structured crew training, and in Australia many restaurants offer traineeships that lead to nationally recognised retail or hospitality qualifications. If you have started one, list it under Training with the qualification code and expected completion date – it signals commitment and it is a genuine point of difference against other first-time applicants.
Growing into shift or management roles
After a year on crew, applications for shift supervisor or assistant manager are internal and competitive. Keep a short record of what you actually did: trained six new crew members, ran the front counter through Friday dinner peaks, managed stock rotation for the McCafé section. Those lines move a resume from crew to shift management far better than adjectives.
