The header that gets a nurse screened in
Credential lines belong under your name, before any employer history:
- RN, state license number, expires 03/2028 – state and number, or a statement that you hold a multistate compact privilege.
- BLS (AHA), expires 09/2027; ACLS, expires 05/2027 – issuing body and date, because an expired card fails the compliance check.
- Specialty and setting – medical-surgical, ICU, emergency, labor and delivery, home health, with bed count.
- Experience level – total years plus years in the specialty, since most postings require a minimum.
A compact license covers participating states only, so name the states you are authorized in. Never list a Social Security number, a date of birth or a scanned license copy on the resume; the credential is verified at offer stage. If a license is still in progress, say so with the expected exam date instead of leaving the line out.
Clinical experience that reads like a unit report
Describe the unit the way a charge nurse would describe a shift: census, acuity, ratio, procedures and documentation system.
- Ratios and census – one to five on a 28-bed telemetry floor; a 90-patient emergency department.
- Skills – IV starts, central line care, ventilator management, titration, triage, wound care, conscious sedation.
- Systems – Epic, Cerner, Meditech, McKesson; label yourself as superuser only if you were one.
- Scope – charge nurse, preceptor, rapid response, code team, unit-based council.
Write the license type precisely: RN, LPN or LVN, APRN, NP. A recruiter setting a filter will reject a page that says nurse without the credential that matches the requisition. State float pool or travel experience too, because both signal fast adaptation and a hiring manager will ask about them in the first interview.
Bullet points that survive a compliance audit
- Managed a five-patient telemetry assignment across 36 beds with zero medication errors in 18 months.
- Cut central line infections on the unit to zero for four consecutive quarters by running a bundle audit.
- Precepted 11 new graduate nurses and cut their orientation time from 12 to 9 weeks.
- Reduced emergency department door-to-triage time from 14 to 6 minutes during peak hours.
Clinical rotations count as experience for a new graduate, labelled clearly as clinical hours rather than employment. Quantify what a nurse manager cares about: errors, infections, falls, throughput, satisfaction scores and orientation time. Keep every line free of patient identifiers, and describe an outcome you personally influenced rather than a unit result you merely witnessed.
Compliance, HIPAA and the paperwork
HIPAA governs what you may write, and the safe rule is no patient, no room number, no date of care, no facility detail that identifies a case. Describe practice in aggregate instead: unit, ratio, acuity, outcome. One page is standard, and two are acceptable with more than ten years of specialty experience. Expect a background check, a drug screen, immunization and TB documentation, and a primary-source license verification. Hospitals also query the national practitioner data bank for some roles, so keep employment dates exact. Bring the original BLS card and your license number to the interview rather than attaching scans to an application that travels through email. Line up two references from charge nurses or unit managers and confirm their contact details before you apply, since a slow verification can cost you the start date.

FAQ
State and license type are enough for screening. Add the number only when the posting asks, and never include a Social Security number, a date of birth or a scanned license.
Yes. BLS, ACLS, PALS and similar cards are checked for validity, so list the issuing body and the month and year of expiry next to each one.
Yes. Label them as clinical rotations with hours, unit type and direct patient care duties, and keep them separate from paid employment so the record stays accurate.
One page for most candidates, two for a long specialty history. Recruiters read the credential block first, so placement matters more than total length.
