USAJOBS Federal Resume: The Format US Agencies Actually Score

Auf den Punkt gebracht
A federal resume is not a one-page private-sector resume. US agencies score it against the announcement's specialized experience statements, so it runs two to five pages and must state hours per week, salary, supervisor names and phone numbers for every job you claim.

What makes federal applications different

  • Length – two to five pages is normal; a longer document than any private-sector resume.
  • Per-job detail – employer, dates, hours per week, salary, supervisor name and phone, and duties in the agency's own language.
  • Specialized experience – the announcement lists it; your resume must show the where, when and how for each statement.
  • Eligibility – citizenship, veteran preference, and any public trust or security requirement.

Read the announcement before you write

Every USAJOBS posting carries a qualifications section with specialized experience and, often, a questionnaire. The HR specialist scores your resume against those statements, not against your own summary. Highlight the phrase you are answering in bold or a separate line, then give the evidence under it. If a statement asks for experience managing a budget, state the amount and the period.

Hours, salary and supervisor lines

These fields are the ones private-sector applicants omit and federal reviewers cannot evaluate without:

  • Employer, city and state, dates from month/year to month/year, 40 hours per week, $62,000 per year.
  • Supervisor: name, title, phone – stated as available on request when you cannot give a number.
  • Duties written as achievements with scope: 12 staff supervised, $2.4M budget managed, 18 months duration.

Formatting rules that survive agency review

Plain text, standard headings, no photo, no graphics, no text boxes, and PDF or DOCX as the announcement allows. Put your name and the announcement number on every page. Keep a master federal resume and copy it per announcement, editing the specialized experience section rather than rewriting the whole document.

FAQ

Two to five pages. The length comes from documenting every job with hours, salary, supervisor and duties, not from padding.

Usually not required, though some announcements ask for a supporting statement. Answer the questionnaire carefully; it carries more weight than a letter.

Only as a source of content. Convert it: add hours per week, salary, supervisor contacts and duties mapped to the specialized experience statements.

No. You must claim it and upload the supporting documents, such as a DD-214, by the closing date of the announcement.
