What store managers screen for
- Availability – evenings, weekends and holidays, written as one line the scheduler can read at a glance.
- Customer service – any till, phone or front-desk work; every floor role touches a customer.
- Physical capacity – overnight stocking and online order picking mean lifting and being on your feet for a full shift, so say so plainly if you can do it.
- Reliability – attendance and tenure at previous jobs matter more than the logos above them.
- Work authorization – one line if you are not a citizen or permanent resident, because the store cannot proceed without it.
A one-page structure that fits a store role
Contact details with city, province and postal code; a headline naming the department you want, such as Store Associate – Front End; a three-line summary with availability and retail experience; jobs with two or three bullets each; skills covering point of sale, cash handling, stocking, online order pickup and languages; and references with name, position and phone. Canadian resumes leave out photos, dates of birth and marital status, and a full street address is unnecessary. Keep to one page unless you have years of department management behind you, and export a PDF so the screening system can read employer names and dates.
Bullets that read like the job
- Handled 150 to 200 transactions per shift on a front-end register and closed the till without a variance.
- Restocked four grocery aisles before 7am, rotating stock and pulling short-dated items for markdown.
- Picked and staged 40 online grocery orders per day at an accuracy rate above 97%.
- Trained three new associates on the returns desk and the store price-match process.
- Supervised self-checkout through peak hours, clearing weight errors and approving age-restricted sales.
Each line names an action, a scale and a result a manager can picture on their own floor.
Mistakes that get a store application skipped
The common problems are easy to avoid. A three-page resume for a part-time role reads as a mismatch. Duty lists copied from the posting, with no outcome behind them, give a manager nothing to compare. An unexplained gap invites the question you could have answered in one line. Leaving availability off forces a phone call the store may never make. A photo or a date of birth raises a human rights question the recruiter would rather not touch. If you apply to several locations, keep one base resume and change the headline and first two bullets; identical documents sent to six stores read as a mass application.
Schedules are published weekly and shift with promotions, holidays and store events, so a candidate who names a wide window is easier to place than one offering two fixed evenings. Give month and year for every start and end date, and write employer names in full; a missing year invites a phone call before anyone reads the rest. If your only experience is unpaid, keep the same shape and name the organization as you would an employer.
The same one-page logic applies to distribution centre and fleet postings, where the keywords change to pick rate, cases per hour, forklift certification and safe lifting limits. Read the posting twice and copy its nouns into your headline and first two bullets; that alone lifts a store application above most of the pile.

FAQ
No. Many associates start with no retail history. Cash handling from a restaurant, volunteer sorting at a food bank or a warehouse job all show the reliability and pace the store needs.
Most hiring runs through the company careers site, and some locations answer questions at customer service. Apply online first; a follow-up visit shows interest but does not replace the application.
List the days and hours you can genuinely work, covering weekends, and name any limit such as class times. Availability that turns out to be wrong after hiring is the fastest way to lose shifts.
Canadian employers usually expect two or three references with contact details at the end of the resume. Former supervisors are strongest; a teacher or coach is acceptable for a first job.
