Auf den Punkt gebracht
Sydney employers receive more applications per role than almost anywhere in Australia, so a Sydney resume has to be scannable in seconds and specific to the local market: your suburb and travel radius, NSW-specific checks, and experience described in the language of the industry you are targeting.

Local details that actually matter

  • Suburb and postcode – commuting time is a real screening factor. Say your suburb and how far you can travel, especially for shift work.
  • NSW clearances – a Working with Children Check under the NSW scheme for education, care and some health roles, plus a police check where the employer requires it.
  • Transport reality – if the role requires a car, say so; if you rely on public transport, note that you can reach the site reliably.
  • Industry language – Sydney’s hiring clusters in finance, technology, professional services, health and government. Use the vocabulary of the cluster you are applying to.

What Sydney recruiters skim for

A hiring manager in the CBD reads the top third of the first page and decides whether to keep going. Put a role-specific headline, two or three lines of summary with years and domain, then your strongest, most recent achievements with numbers. Long duty lists and generic objectives are the most common reason a Sydney application is discarded.

Competing with a large applicant pool

Because volume is high, differentiation comes from specificity. Name the systems, the stakeholders, the scale and the outcome:

  • Managed a portfolio of 60 SME clients across Sydney’s inner west, retaining 94% year on year.
  • Delivered a migration of 40 internal services to AWS with zero unplanned downtime during business hours.
  • Coordinated rosters for 25 staff across three sites in Western Sydney.

If you are moving to Sydney from interstate or overseas, state your arrival date and that you have work rights – employers will not wait for an unknown timeline.

Formatting for local applicant tracking systems

Most large Sydney employers use recruitment software. Keep one column, standard headings, no tables holding key content, no text inside images, and export to PDF from the original document. Two pages is normal, three is acceptable for senior roles, and a photo never belongs on an Australian resume.

FAQ

Yes. Suburb and postcode help a recruiter judge the commute, and for shift or on-site roles that is part of the screening. A full street address is not needed.

For roles involving children – education, childcare, some health and community work – yes, and it is a separate NSW scheme. List the check number and expiry.

For entry-level and casual roles, one page is ideal. Two pages is standard once you have a few years of experience, and senior candidates can use three.

Be specific: numbers, systems, stakeholders and outcomes in the top third of page one, and a headline that names the exact role you want.
