What FIFO recruiters check first
- Tickets and licences – driver licence class, White Card, and any site-specific induction such as Standard 11 for Queensland coal or a current construction induction for WA sites.
- Roster availability – 2:1 and 4:3 are the common patterns; say which you can work and where you fly from.
- Medical clearance – most operators require a pre-employment medical including drug and alcohol testing. State that you can pass one and when your last medical was.
- Site experience – the commodity, the equipment and the production environment. Name them.
The structure that survives ATS screening
Mining companies and labour-hire firms both run applications through screening software. Use one column, no tables for content, no text inside images, and standard headings: contact details, summary, tickets and licences, experience, plant and equipment operated, then referees. Put the tickets block above experience – it is the first filter and it must be findable by keyword.
Describing production and safety work
Write in numbers and equipment names, because both are searched for:
- Operated CAT 793 and Komatsu 830E haul trucks on a 2:1 roster, achieving 98% availability across a 12-month campaign.
- Completed pre-starts and hazard reports daily; zero recordable incidents across two swings.
- Worked as driller’s offsider on RC rigs, including rod handling and sample recovery to QA standards.
- Held Standard 11 and a current HR licence; completed confined space and working at heights training.
Entry routes into FIFO work
Most people enter through trades assistant, cleaner, kitchen or utility roles, or through a labour-hire company supplying a major operator. For those applications emphasise physical capability, camp and remote living experience, punctuality across swings, and any hospitality or cleaning background. A short honest line about being away from home for weeks at a time does more than claiming you love the lifestyle.

FAQ
Not for entry roles. Utilities, cleaning, kitchen and trades assistant positions hire people without mine site experience, provided tickets, medical clearance and roster availability are in order.
A White Card and the right driver licence class are the most portable. Standard 11 matters for Queensland coal, and confined space, working at heights and forklift tickets widen the roles you can apply for.
Two pages. One page for entry-level utility roles; two pages once you have plant, tickets and site history to document.
Yes, briefly. Operators expect it and stating your last medical date removes a reason to screen you out early.
